Chronica of Agonistic Jewish-Islamic Thought

A period of time is defined, as the time, al-zman, by change, by happening. The events of this time are determined, among others, by signs of Jewish-Islamic tensions. The seismic center appears to be located in the Middle East, however the effects, vibrations and meanings of local conflicts circulate globally. The Muslim, the Jew, who for Christian and secular European perspectives have often been two figures of timeless anachronicity, in their seemingly timeless hostility now articulate the sharp actuality of our time.

Al-Zman is a periodical publication, a chronica, for attempts to think the contemporary Jewish-Islamic configuration – think about it, think through it. It welcomes endeavors not simply to resolve enmity, but to transform hostile oppositions into critical thinking, into agonistic thought, which unites in struggle. Al-Zman invites scholars and intellectuals to formulate critical reflections and visions that relate to Jewish-Islamic dynamics, in the Orient, the Occident, North and South. Contributions can articulate also Christian, Arab, Israeli, Palestinian, Iranian, European and other positions.

We particularly call for reengagements with Jewish and Islamic, especially Jewish-Islamic intellectual traditions themselves as sources for agonistic thinking – critical with respect to others, to each other, first and foremost to themselves. The forum’s name, Al-Zman, is coined with such an intention. A fusion of Jewish and Islamic languages, a combination of Hebrew vocalization of the noun with the Arabic definite article, Al-Zman only has meaning, “the time”, in and through this multiplicity. It suggests that this time, our time, Jewish and Islamic thought should unfold their critical potential in thinking with each other, against each other, making sense together.

Chronique d’une pensée judéo-islamique agnostique

Toute époque, en tant qu’un temps ou le temps, al-zman, se définit par ce qui y change et ce qui y advient. Les événements de notre temps à nous se déploient, entre autres, sous le signe des tensions entre juifs et musulmans. Même si l’épicentre de celles-ci se situe manifestement au Moyen-Orient, leurs effets, leurs retentissements ou leurs significations vont bien au-delà d’un confit local ; ils circulent sur le globe pour prendre ainsi une dimension planétaire. Le musulman et le juif qui, du point de vue d’une Europe chrétienne ou séculière, ont souvent représenté les deux figures de l’intempestif, maintenant, à travers leur hostilité en apparence immémoriale et intemporelle, articulent la brulante actualité de notre temps.

Al-Zman est un forum périodique, une chronique, consacré aux tentatives pour penser la configuration judéo-islamique contemporaine : pour penser à propos mais aussi à travers cette configuration. Il accueille les efforts qui tentent non pas simplement de résoudre l’animosité, mais de transformer l’antagonisme hostile en une pensée critique et agnostique rejoignant la lutte que nous devons mener tous ensemble. Dans cette optique, Al-Zman invite les chercheurs et les intellectuels d’élaborer des réflexions et approches critiques qui se rapportent aux dynamiques judéo-islamiques aussi bien en Orient qu’en Occident, aussi bien au Nord qu’au Sud. Les contributions peuvent également porter sur d’autres antagonismes qui travaillent ces dynamiques, antagonismes impliquant le chrétien, l’arabe, l’israélien, le palestinien, l’iranien, l’européen etc.

Nous encourageons particulièrement des efforts visant à reconsidérer les traditions intellectuelles juive, islamique et, encore davantage, judéo-islamique précisément en tant sources d’une pensée agnostique à venir, une pensée critique vis-à-vis des autres traditions, vis-à-vis des traditions juive ou islamique et avant tout vis-à-vis de ses propres sources. Le nom du forum, Al-Zman, est forgé à partir d’une telle visée. Au croisement des langues du judaïsme et de l’islam, en combinant la variante hébraïque du terme « temps » avec l’article défini en arabe, Al-Zman a seulement du sens à partir et à travers cette pluralité. Il suggère que notre temps est celui où les pensées juives et islamiques devraient puiser dans leur potentiel citrique afin de penser les unes avec les autres, les unes contre les autres, et de faire sens ensemble.

כרוניקה של מחשבה יהודית-אסלאמית אגוניסטית

תקופת זמן מוגדרת, בבחינת הזמן, אל-זמן, על ידי שינוי, התרחשות. אירועי הזמן הזה מוגדרים, בין היתר, על ידי סימני מתח יהודי-איסלמי. דומה כי מוקד הרעד נמצא במזרח התיכון, אך ההשפעות, הויברציות והמשמעויות של הסכסוכים המקומיים סובבות ברחבי העולם. המוסלמי, היהודי, אשר מנקודת המבט הנוצרית והחילונית האירופית היוו לעתים קרובות שתי דמויות של אנכרוניזם אל-זמני, במראית עוינותם הנצחית מטעימים כיום את האקטואליות החדה של זמננו.

אל-זמן הוא כתב עת, כרוניקה, המוקדש לניסיונות לחשוב את התצורה היהודית-אסלאמית העכשווית – לחשוב עליה, לחשוב דרכה. הוא מקדם בברכה מאמצים לא רק לפתור את האיבה, אלא להפוך עוינות לעיון ביקורתי, למחשבה אגוניסטית, המאחדת במאבק. אל-זמן מזמין חוקרים ואינטלקטואלים לנסח מחשבות וחזונות ביקורתיים הקשורים לדינמיקה היהודית-אסלאמית, באוריינט,באוקסידנט, בצפון ובדרום. המאמרים יכולים לבטא גם עמדות נוצריות, ערביות, ישראליות, פלסטיניות, איראניות, אירופיות ואחרות.

אנו קוראים במיוחד לחידוש העיסוק במסורות האינטלקטואליות היהודיות והאסלאמיות, ובמיוחד במסורות היהודיות-אסלאמיות עצמן, כמקורות לחשיבה אגוניסטית – ביקורתיים כלפי אחרים, אלו כלפי אלו, ובראש ובראשונה כלפי עצמם. שם הפורום, אל-זמן,נטבע בכוונה זו. שילוב של שפות יהודיות ואיסלאמיות, שילוב של ההגייה העברית של שם העצם עם היידוע הערבי, לאל-זמן יש משמעות, “הזמן”, רק בתוך הריבוי הזה ודרכו. הוא מציע כי בזמן הזה, זמננו, על המחשבה היהודית והאיסלאמית לפרוש את הפוטנציאל הביקורתי שלהן בחשיבה זו עם זו, זו כנגד זו, תוך יצירת משמעות משותפת.

تاريخ الفكر اليهودي الإسلامي التنافسي

يعرّف أي زمن، بما هو زمن أو دعنا نقول Al-Zman، بالتغير والحدوث. تتحدد أحداث زمننا هذا، من بين أمور أخرى، تحت التوترات بين اليهود والمسلمون. مركز الزلازل يقع في الشرق الأوسط ظاهرياً. بيد أن آثار هذه الصراعات المحلية وتداعيات ودلالاتها تنتشر عالميًا. المسلم واليهودي اللذان كانا يمثلان، في وجهة نظر الأوروبا المسيحية ثم العلمانية، وجهين للمفارقة التاريخية المزمنة، يُعبّران الآن، في عدائهما الذي يبدو أزليًا، عن الواقعية الصارخة لعصرنا.

“الزمن” (Al-Zman) منتدي الكترونياً مخصص للمحاولات المعاصرة للتفكير في التكوين اليهودي-الإسلامي الراهن – سواء كان ذلك حول هذا التكوين اؤ إنطلاقاً منه. تُرحّب المجلة بالجهود المبذولة ليس فقط لحلّ العداء، بل لتحويل التناقضات العدائية إلى تفكير نقدي، إلى فكر نضالي، يوحد في النضال. تدعو “الزمان” الباحثين والمثقفين إلى صياغة تأملات ورؤى نقدية تتعلق بالديناميكيات اليهودية الإسلامية، في الشرق والغرب، والشمال والجنوب. يمكن للمساهمات أيضًا التعبير عن مواقف مسيحية وعربية وإسرائيلية وفلسطينية وإيرانية وأوروبية وغيرها. ندعو تحديدًا إلى إعادة التفاعل مع التقاليد الفكرية اليهودية والإسلامية، وخاصةً اليهودية-الإسلامية نفسها، كمصادر للتفكير النضالي – نقدي تجاه الآخرين، تجاه بعضهم البعض، وقبل كل شيء تجاه أنفسهم. وقد صاغ اسم المنتدى، “الزمان”، بهذه النية. إنه اندماج بين اللغتين اليهودية والإسلامية، ودمج بين النطق العبري للاسم وأداة التعريف العربية، فالزمان لا معنى له إلا “الزمان”، في هذا التعدد ومن خلاله. ويشير هذا إلى أن هذا الزمان، زماننا، يجب أن يُطلق الفكر اليهودي والإسلامي إمكاناته النقدية في التفكير معًا، وفي مواجهة بعضهما البعض، وإيجاد المعنى معًا.

Rethinking Modern Politics Through Jewish and Islamic Sources

This forum is associated with the research project ‘Rethinking Modern Politics Through Jewish and Islamic Sources’ (REPOLIJIS). REPOLIJIS is a four-year research project funded by the French research authority, the ANR (Agence Nationale de la Recherche). The project aims to promote the comparative study of post-WWII Jewish and Islamic political thought. It particularly focuses on contemporary efforts to rethink or problematise modern politics by turning to Jewish or Islamic traditions of political thought.

The comparative perspective adopted by REPOLIJIS is informed by the historical fact that both these traditions were perceived as heterogenic to Christian underpinnings of secularized European political thought and therefore as offering new horizons for modern politics. The guiding idea of the project is that studying the efforts to assert Jewish and Islamic traditions in modern political thought from such a comparative perspective will help to better grasp both the common and distinct dynamics of these traditions. Furthermore, it will challenge prevailing narratives of conflict or incompatibility, as well as overly simplistic identifications, both between Jewish and Islamic cultures and between them and European culture.

The global objective of REPOLIJIS is twofold. Firstly, it seeks to provide a new understanding of the topicality of Jewish and Islamic political thought in the contemporary context. On a more critical note, we believe that such an archaeology of the present is a necessary reflexive step towards deconstructing the theological-political resources of conflict and of challenges to democratic principles in both Jewish and Islamic traditions.

Scientifically, the project is structured by three central notions of modern political thought: sovereignty, law and nation. These are completed by three transversal questions which echo three major historical processes characterizing the global era that opened up since WWII: secularization, decolonization and democratization.

Hosted by the University of Lille, the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and the École Normale Supérieure, REPOLIJIS brings together a network of research institutions in France, Europe, the United States and the Middle East.In the framework of the project a series of scientific events will take place, including research seminars, workshops, conferences and publications.

Repenser la politique moderne à travers les sources juives et Islamiques

Ce forum est associé au projet de recherche « Repenser la politique moderne à travers les sources juives et islamiques » (REPOLIJIS). REPOLIJIS est un projet de recherche de quatre ans financé par l’Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR). Le projet vise à promouvoir l’étude comparative de la pensée politique juive et islamique après la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Il se concentre en particulier sur les tentatives contemporaines cherchant à repenser ou à problématiser la politique moderne en se tournant vers les traditions juive ou islamique de la pensée politique.

La perspective comparative adoptée par REPOLIJIS s’appuie sur le constat historique selon lequel ces deux traditions ont été perçues comme hétérogènes par rapport aux fondements chrétiens de la pensée politique européenne sécularisée et ont ainsi pu offrir de nouveaux horizons vis-à-vis de la politique moderne. L’idée directrice du projet est que l’étude, à partir d’une telle perspective comparative, des entreprises théoriques qui ont cherché à affirmer les traditions juives et islamiques dans la pensée politique moderne permettra de mieux saisir les dynamiques communes et distinctes de ces traditions. De surcroît, une telle étude comparée remettra en question les récits dominants axés sur la thèse de conflit ou d’incompatibilité, ainsi que les identifications trop simplistes, tant entre les cultures juive et islamique qu’entre celles-ci et la culture européenne.

L’objectif global de REPOLIJIS est double. Premièrement, il tente de fournir une nouvelle compréhension de l’actualité de la pensée politique juive et islamique dans le contexte contemporain. Deuxièmement et d’un point de vue plus critique, nous pensons qu’une telle archéologie du présent est une étape réflexive nécessaire vers la déconstruction des ressources théologiques et politiques du conflit, et des obstacles devant les principes démocratiques dans les traditions juive et islamique.

Sur le plan scientifique, le projet s’articule autour de trois notions centrales de la pensée politique moderne : la souveraineté, la loi et la nation. Celles-ci sont complétées par trois questions transversales qui font écho à trois processus historiques majeurs caractérisant l’ère mondiale qui s’est ouverte depuis la Seconde Guerre mondiale : la sécularisation, la décolonisation et la démocratisation.

Hébergé par l’Université de Lille, le Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) et l’École normale supérieure, REPOLIJIS forme un réseau de recherche à travers les institutions de recherche en France, en Europe, aux États-Unis et au Moyen-Orient. Dans le cadre du projet, une série d’événements scientifiques aura lieu, notamment des séminaires de recherche, des journées d’études, des conférences et des publications.

חשיבה מחודשת על פוליטיקה מודרנית דרך מקורות יהודיים ואיסלמיים

פורום זה קשור לפרויקט המחקר “חשיבה מחודשת על הפוליטיקה המודרנית דרך מקורות יהודיים ואיסלמיים” (REPOLIJIS). זהו פרויקט מחקר בן ארבע שנים הממומן על ידי הרשות הצרפתית למחקר, ANR) Agence Nationale de la Recherche). הפרויקט נועד לקדם מחקר השוואתי של המחשבה הפוליטית היהודית והאסלאמית לאחר מלחמת העולם השנייה. הוא מתמקד במיוחד במאמצים עכשוויים לחשוב מחדש על הפוליטיקה המודרנית או לנסח שאלות בנוגע אליה, באמצעות פנייה למסורות היהודיות והאסלאמיות של מחשבה פוליטית.
הפרספקטיבה ההשוואתית שאומצה על ידי REPOLIJIS מבוססת על העובדה ההיסטורית ששתי המסורות הללו נתפסו כהטרוגניות ביחס ליסודות הנוצריים של המחשבה הפוליטית החילונית האירופית, ולכן כפותחות אופקים חדשים לפוליטיקה המודרנית. הרעיון המנחה של הפרויקט הוא שחקירת המאמצים להטעים את המסורות היהודיות והאסלאמיות במחשבה הפוליטית המודרנית מנקודת מבט השוואתית כזו תסייע להבין טוב יותר את הדינמיקה המשותפת והייחודית של מסורות אלה. יתר על כן, היא תאתגר את הנרטיבים הרווחים של סכסוך או חוסר תאימות, כמו גם זיהויים פשטניים מדי, הן בין התרבויות היהודית והאסלאמית והן בינן לבין התרבות האירופית.
המטרה הכללית של REPOLIJIS היא כפולה. ראשית, היא מבקשת לספק הבנה חדשה של הרלוונטיות של המחשבה הפוליטית היהודית והאסלאמית בהקשר העכשווי. מבחינה ביקורתית יותר, אנו מאמינים כי ארכיאולוגיה כזו של ההווה היא צעד רפלקסיבי הכרחי לקראת פירוק המשאבים התיאולוגיים-פוליטיים של סכסוכים ואתגרים לעקרונות הדמוקרטיים הן במסורת היהודית והן במסורת האסלאמית.
מבחינה מדעית, הפרויקט בנוי על שלושה מושגים מרכזיים במחשבה הפוליטית המודרנית: ריבונות, חוק ולאום. לאלה נוספות שלוש שאלות רוחביות המהדהדות שלושה תהליכים היסטוריים מרכזיים המאפיינים את העידן הגלובלי שנפתח לאחר מלחמת העולם השנייה: חילון, דה-קולוניזציה ודמוקרטיזציה.
בסיס הפרויקט הוא באוניברסיטת ליל, במרכז הלאומי למחקר מדעי (CNRS) ובאקול נורמל סופריור, והוא קשור לרשת של מוסדות מחקר בצרפת, אירופה, ארצות הברית והמזרח התיכון. במסגרת הפרויקט תערך סדרת אירועים מדעיים, כולל סמינרים מחקריים, סדנאות, כנסים ופרסומים.

إعادة التفكير في السياسة الحديثة من خلال المصادر اليهودية والإسلامية

يرتبط هذا المنتدى بمشروع البحث ”إعادة التفكير في السياسة الحديثة من خلال المصادر اليهودية والإسلامية“ (REPOLIJIS). REPOLIJIS هو مشروع بحثي مدته أربع سنوات تموله هيئة البحث الفرنسية ANR (Agence Nationale de la Recherche). يهدف المشروع إلى تعزيز الدراسة المقارنة للفكر السياسي اليهودي والإسلامي بعد الحرب العالمية الثانية. ويركز بشكل خاص على الجهود المعاصرة لإعادة التفكير في السياسة الحديثة أو إثارة التساؤلات حولها من خلال اللجوء إلى التقاليد اليهودية أو الإسلامية في الفكر السياسي.

تستند المنظور المقارن الذي يتبناه REPOLIJIS إلى الحقيقة التاريخية المتمثلة في أن هاتين التقاليد كانتا تعتبران متغايرتين مع الأسس المسيحية للفكر السياسي الأوروبي العلماني، وبالتالي توفران آفاقًا جديدة للسياسة الحديثة. الفكرة التوجيهية للمشروع هي أن دراسة الجهود المبذولة لتأكيد التقاليد اليهودية والإسلامية في الفكر السياسي الحديث من منظور مقارن كهذا ستساعد على فهم أفضل للديناميات المشتركة والمتميزة لهذه التقاليد. علاوة على ذلك، ستتحدى الروايات السائدة عن الصراع أو عدم التوافق، وكذلك التعريفات المفرطة في التبسيط، سواء بين الثقافات اليهودية والإسلامية أو بينهما وبين الثقافة الأوروبية.

الهدف العام لـ REPOLIJIS مزدوج. أولاً، يسعى إلى توفير فهم جديد لأهمية الفكر السياسي اليهودي والإسلامي في السياق المعاصر. ومن الناحية النقدية، نعتقد أن مثل هذه الآثار الحالية هي خطوة انعكاسية ضرورية نحو تفكيك الموارد اللاهوتية والسياسية للصراع والتحديات التي تواجه المبادئ الديمقراطية في كل من التقاليد اليهودية والإسلامية.

من الناحية العلمية، يتمحور المشروع حول ثلاثة مفاهيم أساسية للفكر السياسي الحديث: السيادة والقانون والأمة. وتكمل هذه المفاهيم ثلاثة أسئلة شاملة تعكس ثلاثة عمليات تاريخية رئيسية تميز العصر العالمي الذي بدأ منذ الحرب العالمية الثانية: العلمنة وتحرير المستعمرات والديمقراطية.

يستضيف مشروع REPOLIJIS كل من جامعة ليل والمركز الوطني للبحث العلمي (CNRS) والمدرسة العليا العادية، ويجمع شبكة من مؤسسات البحث في فرنسا وأوروبا والولايات المتحدة والشرق الأوسط. وفي إطار هذا المشروع، ستُعقد سلسلة من الفعاليات العلمية، بما في ذلك ندوات بحثية وورش عمل ومؤتمرات ومنشورات.
